Art in the Pages

""Remember the Pandamania and Party Animals (donkeys and elephants) sculptures in Washington D.C. a few years ago? Or perhaps you visited the Chicago cows or the Fredericksburg fish statues. Not only did these popular initiatives provide a showcase for local artists and benefit good causes, their wit and originality delighted the entire community.

And now, the Fairfax Library Foundation is proud to present:

Art in the Pages

""

Note! The design submission period is now closed. The submitted designs may be viewed here.

Local artists have submitted designs to transform these blank sculptures (pictured, right) of an open book into colorful works of art. We're also inviting businesses, organizations, and individuals to sponsor these works of art.

The large, open book statues will go on display outside libraries, schools, and businesses in Fairfax County and the City of Fairfax in the spring of 2008, serving as centerpieces for many cultural and literacy programs. After months on display throughout the summer of 2008, sponsors at the $10,000 Publisher Level will have the option to keep the open book statue.  Statues that are not kept will be donated to a library branch or other location or auctioned with proceeds benefiting the Library system through the Fairfax Library Foundation.

We are excited about the possibility of this rare one-time project to have the joys of art and reading celebrated by the entire community – all ages, all cultures!
