Alma Powell
Co-chair, America's Promise
Alma Powell was named to the board of directors in March 2001, but she has been part of America's Promise since its founding. She brings an unwavering commitment to children and families and a lifetime of service to our nation's communities.
Mrs. Powell is chairman of the advisory board for the Pew Partnership for Civic Change and is the interim co-chairperson of the board of trustees of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. As the spouse of the current Secretary of State, she serves as the honorary president of the Associates of the American Foreign Service Worldwide, sits on the advisory board of The Hospitality and Information Service and is an honorary member of the Fine Arts Committee of the Department of State.
In addtion to her many service-minded activities, Mrs. Powell has added "author" to her list of credits. In 2003, her two children's books, My Little Wagon and America's Promise, were launched with great success in an effort to bring the message of America's Promise to even more young people and their families.
Mrs. Powell earned a degree from Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, and studied speech pathology and audiology at Emerson College in Boston. She is the recipient of an honorary doctor of human letters from Emerson College and of the Civic Change Award from the Pew Partnership for Civic Change.
