Library Friends Donate $50,000 To New Fairfax City Branch
Fairfax, VA - The Friends of the Fairfax City Regional Library will present a check for $50,000 to the Fairfax Library Foundation on Tuesday, August 31 at 10 a.m. at the Fairfax City Regional Library, located at 3915 Chain Bridge Road in Fairfax.
The $50,000 was raised from used book sales conducted by the Friends of the Fairfax City Regional Library. The money is being given to the FCPL Foundation for support of the branch after its relocation to the corner of Old Lee Highway and North Street in Fairfax City.
The current Library building will be turned over to developers at the completion of the relocation project. The Trammell Crow Company is constructing the new Library building as part of its redevelopment of downtown Fairfax City. Construction is expected to begin in 2005, and the relocated Library branch is projected to open 12 - 16 months after that.
The Friends of the Fairfax City Regional Library will continue to raise funds for the branch through their twice-yearly used book sales. "This very small group does a huge amount of work," says Marilyn Feldman, the president of the all-volunteer Friends group. "Their support of the Library is unstinting." The Friends' next used book sale will be held October 14 - 16.
The Friends collect used books in good condition from Library customers. They sort and price the books; staff the weekend-long sales, and determine how the funds will be used. In the past year, the Friends have helped pay for performers for summer Library programs for kids, and purchased desks, book carts, shelves, magazine subscriptions, and conservation supplies for the Library's Virginia Room. They also sponsor an annual luncheon to thank Library volunteers, and host the Fairfax Bibliophiles, a book-collecting group.
