Dorothy “Dot” Callahan Memorial Fund Benefits Library Foundation

Fairfax, VA - The Fairfax Library Foundation has established the Dorothy “Dot” Callahan Memorial Fund to honor a former McLean book store owner who died in 2005. Callahan, who operated McLean Books from 1971 – 1984, was also past president of the Greater McLean Republican Women’s Club and a member of what is now the Junior League of Northern Virginia. She was married to Vince Callahan, Jr., a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, for 44 years.

“I met Dot more than 40 years ago, and one of her fondest dreams was to open a book store,” says McLean resident Betsy Walsh who made the first contribution. “When she did, it was a wonderful one and you could see her happiness every time you visited the store. My immediate thought for a memorial was the library foundation because of her love for books.”

Born in Bismarck, North Dakota, Callahan moved to Northern Virginia as an infant and lived here most of her life. She graduated from Washington-Lee High School and attended both Madison College (now James Madison University) and George Washington University. In addition to her book store ownership, Callahan worked for the U.S. Public Health Service and for the Kaiser Permanente Health Plan.
